Support and mentoring

Chairing can be challenging

That’s why we’re here. We are the champion for charity chairs. We know what the role is like, and what challenges you and your charity might face.

Not only this, but we have a collaborative community of over 1700 chairs and trustees who are here to connect and support each other.

For chairs, we offer a variety of ways to get connected and get support:

  • Mentoring for first-time chairs
  • A support service for chairs
  • Peer support group sessions (online and in-person)
  • Our collaborative community – connect online to share insights, ask questions, and encourage each other

Find out about all of these options below.

How we can help you

Support service

We offer a support service to chairs who need some additional guidance. Through this service you could get advice from an experienced chair or governance consultants, who have specific professional expertise.

Mentoring

We know that being a first-time chair can be really daunting. Having an experienced chair mentor to help you find your feet and settle into your role can make a world of difference!

Community

Having a community of peers is great for sharing advice and getting support and encouragement. We have over 1700 members – chairs and trustees from organisations large and small – and we offer opportunities to connect online and in person.

Peer support group sessions

We have both online and in-person sessions for chairs to come together, share insights, encourage each other, and build your network. (We also offer online and in-person peer sessions for trustees too).

Online peer sessions

Would you like the chance to meet and connect with other chairs? To bring tricky topics, get advice, and give advice to others?

As part of our collaborative community events, we have regular online sessions so you can chat to other chairs to give and get advice, sharing challenges and solutions together.

The idea is that we can share, chair to chair, and together come up with some actions, inputs or resources that can help.

These sessions are facilitated by one of the Association of Chairs team or a volunteer member, and will include group discussions and breakout rooms. These sessions are for members only.

In-person peer sessions

We host monthly face-to-face peer support group sessions at our office space in London, to offer you support and help you build a network of chairs you can call on for ideas, and encouragement.

These are two-hour facilitated sessions in the evening, where you will be introduced to fellow chairs, get to know each other and talk though issues with other chairs who share similar challenges and experiences.

We’ll take a deep dive into common chairing issues at each session and will encourage you to bring live issues with you to the event, with the opportunity to explore them with your peers in small groups. These sessions are for members and non-members.
