Training and resources for charity boards

The Association of Chairs is a community for all charity and non-profit chairs. And because an effective board makes for an effective charity, we offer training for trustees too – on their role and the crucial aspects of charity governance that they need to know.

We’re experts in charity and non-profit governance and offer high-quality, low-cost training that is accessible to board members from large and small charities.

You don’t have to be a member to book onto our training for chairs and trustees – you can book onto a training webinar that suits you.

If your organisation has board membership, you can access all our events, including training, topical discussions, and networking, plus many more benefits, included as part of your membership.

Board essentials training for trustees

Our Board Essentials webinars run regularly and are open to both members and non-members. Examples of the types of events we run are below:

Board Essentials: Your Legal Responsibilities – getting the basics right

In this 75-minute session, we’ll give you a clear overview of your trustee responsibilities and take you through your legal duties in a clear and engaging way. There will be a chance to ask questions and we’ll signpost you to further support. This session is also suitable as a refresher for existing trustees.

By the end of this introductory webinar you will understand:

  • The main duties and responsibilities of a trustee
  • How to carry out your trusteeship duties effectively
  • How to comply with your governing document and the law
  • How to act in your charity’s best interest and ensure accountability
  • How to manage your charity’s resources responsibly

Board Essentials: Understanding Your Charity’s Accounts – A practical introduction for trustees

Do charity accounts feel like a mystery? This 75-minute session is designed to help trustees of small charities feel more confident reading and understanding their charity’s annual accounts. Whether you’re new to trusteeship or simply want to demystify the numbers, this session will walk you through what to look for and why it matters.

About the trainer: Liz Pepler is a charity resilience specialist, founder of Embrace Finance and co-founder of the Small Charity Friendly Collective. She is an experienced committee chair, treasurer, trustee and finance director and specialises in smaller charities with an annual income up to £1m.

Board Essentials: Diversify Your Board

In this 75-minute session, you’ll get an introduction into how to diversify your charity board. This session will get you to think differently about how you approach your recruitment to try and attract trustees from a range of backgrounds and make your board more inclusive.

The session covers key questions such as:

  • What does trustee diversity mean?
  • Why is it important?
  • How can you build a diverse board?

About the trainer: Sophia Moreau is a diversity, equity and inclusion specialist, a multi-award winning campaigner and winner of the Burberry British Diversity Award for campaigner of the year 2022.
